It is one thing to try and learn some European language like Spanish, French, German or some such. You already know the script and there is a lot of overlap.
But a language like Hebrew, it is a great challenge. First one needs to learn the AlephBet, what each letter is called, and how it is pronounced, then you start with very basic sentences and progress slowly.
I am still at a very basic level, but I am pretty sure I can hold basic conversations, enough to work and survive in this language.
Reading the Torah though, I am not that advanced yet. Need to work a lot more.

It is surprising how many words in daily use come from different languages
Example:
