You should do it by caste. Tamil Gounders, Nadars and Chettiars are the only caste that matter. In Telugus, it's only the Reddys, to some extent the Kammas. Etc etc. For Marathis (ethnic) it's Vaidyas, the Parsis. Punjabis it's mostly Khatris and some pocket Sikhs in Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala.
