A "Bye Election to Assembly Constituencies" (more commonly spelled by-election) is an election held to fill a seat in a state legislative assembly before the regular election is due.
Normally, an MLA is elected for a 5-year term. But if that seat becomes vacant in the middle of the term—for example because the MLA:
Resigns
Dies
Is disqualified
Is convicted of a crime
Is elected to another legislature and gives up the seat
then a by-election is conducted for that single constituency.
