The entire landmass, along with its legendary capitals of Thenmadurai and Kapatapuram, was said to be swallowed by a series of massive cataclysmic deluges (Kadal Kol), forcing the surviving population to migrate north to modern Tamil Nadu.
The precise breakdown of these 49 territories comes from Adiyarkkunallar, a 12th-century CE Tamil commentator. He detailed this geography while writing a commentary on the Silappadhikaram, a 5th-century CE Tamil epic. Adiyarkkunallar cited earlier, now-lost texts to describe the exact dimensions and names of the regions devoured by the sea.
