According to legend, the continent was divided into 49 distinct territories (nadus). These were organized into seven ecological zones of seven territories each.
The entire landmass, along with its legendary capitals of Thenmadurai and Kapatapuram, was said to be swallowed by a series of massive cataclysmic deluges (Kadal Kol), forcing the surviving population to migrate north to modern Tamil Nadu.
The precise breakdown of these 49 territories comes from Adiyarkkunallar, a 12th-century CE Tamil commentator. He detailed this geography while writing a commentary on the Silappadhikaram, a 5th-century CE Tamil epic. Adiyarkkunallar cited earlier, now-lost texts to describe the exact dimensions and names of the regions devoured by the sea.
