In reality, Marathas mostly targeted muslim nobles and hindu merchants benefitting them like Jagat seth. It was triggered by nawab refusing to pay chauth even tho marathas had forcefully obtained nominal rights from mughals. Nawab's men killed peaceful maratha envoy triggering raids.
Apparently, there is also some bengali lullaby from the time about bargis coming to pillage but its all based on hearsay. How can civilians know who is an actual maratha or some afghan mercenary of nawab during fog of war?
