How long would it realistically take for one person to make an Elden Ring like game, obviously on a much smaller scale? I mean doing basically everything themselves programming, combat, level design, music, animation, visuals, writing, etc.
And say it’s made by a tiny team of like 2-3 people max. Is that even remotely realistic within, say, 5–10 years?
Also, what would actually give a game like that a decent chance of being commercially successful? Because I feel like making the game is only half the problem. You could spend years making something genuinely good and still have nobody play it.

jk, thing is there is alot of grunt work. even with the huge team they have to offshore work. you can make a fun game without all that jazz like indie game

I know this isnt the answer you want but if ur actually interested in game dev, you can make a game it will just be an indie scale one, but it can be incredible, even at that.

To answer your question actually, I'd say 7-8 years, maybe 10, give or take with improvements in ai and such, it will probably take 7-8 years due to the fact that even with Ai, it's just a lot of work for one single person at a singular scale

not sure about ER but Dark Sovls is one of my favourite games and from what I imagine it should take an upwards of 30 years to even make a playable beta varient of such title, for a single person of course

at that point why even bother wasting so much time producing slop that nobody would play or praise
I dont think most people realise just how convoluted it is to make a full fledged "open-world" or even a rudimentary sandbox game. The kind of talent and skills required are seldom found in a single person, like I imagine even Da Vinci would curse himself taking up such feat. Not sure if you've seen the devs of the highly acclaimed game GTA:San Andreas talk about their experience working at R* back then in even in PS2 era, I implore you check out their interviews or even twitter posts. How they had to circumnavigate the limitations of the DVD discs being slow by optimising various data assets in such a way that everything was read and rendered in time before you cold possibly leave the draw distance

Expedition 33 was done by 33 devs
And majority of you guys are dumb if we have the same structure as a traditional game company and replace every person with a role with a claude max subscription you can make it in less than 2 years if you know what you are doing 1 year tops.
As this anon said >>205938
People are stuck with the mindset of free tier ai.
Whereas today's ai can meaningfully replace all work from a team.

The year is long don't think if you reduce the scope and just focus on one boss you can build overnight.
The sheer scales adds the time not any bottleneck.
So if you take a small region you can do it in a month at the latest.

U, my friend did not see Robloxs game.
Made by teenagers.
It can put Even AA studios under shame such scale and complexity.
And they are just 3 guys or sometimes only one guy.
Remaking entire maps in a semester.
