After Japan's defeat, the country collapsed completely, and the 5 million returning soldiers could not be provided with jobs. Many of these defeated soldiers could only resort to begging, scavenging trash, or shining shoes.
Japanese women began to look down on these defeated soldiers; in their minds, the heroes instantly became American GIs. They accompanied American GIs to eat, sing, play, and have fun, scrambling to marry them. They turned a blind eye to the wounded and defeated soldiers who came to shine their shoes or beg, not even sparing them a glance.
