I love the contrast between Rikishi and Joe. Rikishi is the pure bred ubermensch, his name represents japanese martial culture but the way he carries himself is very dignified and everyone around him becomes inferior to him.
Joe otoh is a sick stray dog that no one wants to pet. He is a called a mangy mutt by his own coach. He represents the inferior male, a low breed who has a strong body but a sick mind.
But the lowly man gets inspired by the higher man and tried to redeem himself. This tale is really touching i don't think it's been written anywhere in any medium.
