The confusion stems from conflating vedic sanskrit (the og language of vedas of 2000BC or older) and classical sanskrit (the language of puranas and classical literature standardised by panini around 6th century BC) Classical sanskrit was always the elite language. Vedic sanskrit and related vernaculars never died. It simply evolved into shaurseni prakrit then into khadiboli and finally into modern day hindi.
