BORI has compiled critical edition of Mahabharata.
Pānini in his 6th century BC Ashtadhyayi mentions Mahabharata war, Vāsudev(Krishna) and Arjuna.
2nd century CE 'Vrishni coins' represent Krishna and Balaram indicating they have been revered heroes for a long time.

Mahabharat is an epic poem (mahakavya) so ofc poetic devices like hyperbole and metaphor have been used

Caliph burnt all variant manuscripts to create the standard quran kek. Even then different recitations like Warsh and Hafs exist with verses completely different in meaning.
