The Sack of Mecca took place on January 11, 930 CE, when the Qarmatians—a radical millenarian Ismaili Shii movement from Bahrain—attacked and plundered the holy city during the Hajj pilgrimage.
The Attack Leader: Led by the Qarmatian ruler Abu Tahir al-Jannabi, who believed a new messiah (mahdi) had arrived to nullify existing religious laws.
The attackers gained entry into the city by claiming they came in peace to exercise their right as Muslims to perform the pilgrimage.
Once inside, they massacred thousands of pilgrims performing rituals, threw corpses into the Well of Zamzam, and looted the Kaaba.
