The warriors of the Bhumihar community, settled on the banks of the Ganga in Begusarai, had waged an armed struggle against the British East India Company, intercepting the treasure-laden English ships and the trading vessels of the East India Company passing through the Ganga River, collecting taxes from them, and even looting the ships if they refused to pay.
