In my personal understanding, varna was neither based on birth nor based on profession. It was based on gunas
The higher the sattva inside a man, the higher varna he is. So,
Barhmins have highest sattva guna
Kshyteiya have highest rajsic guna
Vaishya are in spectrum between rajsic and tamas
And shudras have highest tamsic guna
